Big Week for James!

James turned 3 last week! I can't believe that my little guy is such a big boy now.  He is getting so much better at talking and putting sentences together, and I love seeing him learn and discover things on his own. He is currently obsessed with animals and their habitats...especially animals from Africa.  James has developed a very spunky yet sweet personality with a great imagination.  Everyday is a new challenge and I'm always impressed with the things he knows!

The day after his birthday was a day I had been looking forward to for a long time! Due to his speech delay, James qualifies for special services through the preschool at Barratt Elementary.  He even gets a school bus that picks him up! He goes three days a week, for three hours each time.  James was SO excited to go on the school bus and wear his new Thomas the Train backpack! It was surreal for me to see him leave.  He came back extremely hyped up, and I'm hoping that wears off a lit bit as going to school becomes more of a routine.  My little preschooler!!

Thanksgiving

A little late, but I thought that our Thanksgiving activities deserved a quick mention.  Chris, the kids, and I started the day off with a little dance party to bring in the Christmas season, and then I got to cooking! Danny had to work, so Elaina and the kids came over to our house to celebrate the day with us and Brooke.  Elaina cooked an AMAZING turkey, candied yams, and a great pumpkin pie.  I made mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, and the stuffing.  It was a huge success! Elaina and Brooke came over around 3:00, and after eating we enjoyed the evening playing games.  It was very low-key, and very relaxing.  :)

Crawling Machine

Since the beginning of November, Lily has been very interested in crawling.  She is now extremely fast and just appears out of nowhere, typically right when I'm trying to close a door.  Her favorite thing is to follow James around with an expectant grin on her face, or to crawl around to the back door to suck on the blinds. It has been so much fun watching her explore! Just this morning I caught her crawling under the Christmas tree to play with the outlets in back.....naughty girl.

She is also quite the chatterbox, as evidenced here.

We love our little Lily Pad!

Whitney Maughan Photography

About a month ago my neighbor wanted to take some pictures of Lily for her portfolio.  We drove up to her grandparents' orchard, tucked up next to the mountains.  It was a stunning site and James had a blast playing with the horses (yes, he actually found a way under the fence and got into the horse corral!).  Lily got fussy after five minutes, so I ended up having to hold her for the rest of the pics.  We got some beautiful ones! I am so obsessed with my cute little girl.  Thanks again Whitney!

Bad Bad Blogger

The past three months or so have been an absolute whirlwind, and blogging became a low priority for me.  For the sake of getting this blog up-to-date, I will do the cliff notes version.

For the last year Chris has been meeting with surgeons and doctors to discover what was causing him so much back pain.  It was discovered that one of his lower discs had deteriorated and needed to be removed.  After much praying and fasting, we decided it was the right decision for our family and Chris went in to have that disc removed and have his vertebra fused on October 4th.  My mom came out for two weeks to help me with Chris's recovery and the kids.  I KNOW that I wouldn't have survived if she hadn't have come.  Chris stayed in our extra room in a hospital bed, and Lily was moved into my room.  Lily and I are both light sleepers, and kept waking each other up every night.  I didn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time.  A month after Chris's surgery, he moved back into my bed and Lily went back to sleeping in her own room (yay!!).  Almost instantly, Lily started sleeping a solid 8 hours without waking up once, which meant this happy Mom started getting decent sleep as well! I hadn't had a decent night's sleep since I was 7 months pregnant.  I can't even tell you good I felt after a few good nights of sleep.

Chris has been recovering well, and his X-rays are looking as they should.  He is still having significant sciatic  nerve pain down his leg which is limiting his mobility, but everyday he is getting a little better.  It'll still be a full year until he is completely back to normal.

In other news, on the same day I dropped Chris off for surgery, we were hanging out at home when James started screaming.  One of our candle jars apparently had a crack and had sliced James's thumb. It was obvious he needed stitches, so my Mom and I threw the kids in the car and went to the ER (the same building Chris was currently in having his back surgery!).  Most traumatic experience ever.  I couldn't believe how slow the ER moved, even with having a screaming toddler and a blood-soaked rag.  It took a half hour just for a nurse to LOOK at his thumb.  We decided to put him under for the stitches (it was either that or putting him in restraints and have him feel/remember everything).   Little did I know that simply putting the IV in would be the most traumatic event of the night.  I had to literally lay on top of him just to keep him still, and the STUPID nurse was a novice and kept messing up the IV.  They had to redo it three times.  Meanwhile, James is hysterical and blood is getting all over our clothes.  Finally they got the IV in, but then it took another half hour of me laying on top of him and my mom distracting him with her phone before the respiratory nurse came with the anesthesia.  Finally the doctor was able to stitch up his thumb, and my mom could leave to change Lily (who thought it appropriate timing for a blowout).  It took James an hour before he woke up from anesthesia, and then we were finally able to leave.  Surprisingly, James was really careful with his wrapping until his stitches were removed a week later.  Since this experience, James has become obsessed with band-aids and still talks about his "owie."

About two weeks before Chris's surgery, I went to my doctor to get a physical and some blood work done. I had been losing more and more weight, without trying to, and my hair was falling out by the handfuls.  I mean, REALLY falling out.  In addition, I kept feeling my heart race.  The day before Chris's surgery I got a call from my doctor that I had hyperthyroidism.  After meeting with an endocrinologist, and getting my blood drawn more times than I'd like, it was confirmed that I have postpartum thyroiditis.  Since leaning this, my body has left hyperthyroidism and gone into hypothyroidism (which was expected).  Before I started taking a thyroid supplement, I was having some serious fatigue and lots of nausea.  There were some days it was all I could do to keep my kids fed, clothed, and relatively happy.  Even though I felt too sick to eat anything, I was gaining weight back because my body wasn't making enough thyroid.  I have since been taking a thyroid medicine and am feeling mostly back to normal.  My doctor thinks that I should start balancing out in the next few months, and my thyroid should return to normal.  I'll just have to be careful with my next pregnancy, as there is a 80% chance that this problem will return.

This thyroid problem actually explained a lot of issues we had been having with Lily.  At 6 months of age, she still had to eat every 2-3 hours, and if I made her wait longer she never increased  the amount of food to make up for it.  This carried into the night, and she was still up wanting to eat every 2 hours at night.  When I'd nurse her, she never ate more than 5-7 minutes all together.  Highly frustrating.  It turns out that my breast milk quality was affected by my thyroid, which explains why she had to eat a little, very frequently.  I made the decision to quit nursing at 6 months, especially since I couldn't take my thyroid meds and nurse at the same time.  I thought she would take to formula right away.  WRONG.  It was an absolutely nightmare.  We tried different formulas, bottles, temperatures, positions, yet nothing worked.  For weeks she wouldn't eat more than 10 oz a day, and was starting to lose weight.  We have tried different pediatricians, therapies, and a pediatric gastroenterologist.   Nothing and no one helped.  We have since gotten into a  routine and she has gotten used to the taste of formula and a bottle.  She still doesn't take more than 20-24 oz a day, but she has started gaining a little weight back and is still very healthy.  She still has some bad eating days, but overall she is slowly doing better, so I can't complain.  I'm done with trying to figure this situation out, and I'm going to just let it be what it is.  She's still a very happy girl and full of constant smiles!

More has been happening, but this is the big stuff.  Turns out I'm not very good at putting things into a cliff notes version, because this was much longer than I meant it to be.  :)

Big Boy Bed

Once James started climbing out of his crib at night and in the mornings to play with his toys, we realized that it was time to switch him into a toddler bed.  He kept climbing out of the crib onto his toy shelf to get down, and it was just too dangerous.  I actually have a video I took of him doing this and it is absolutely hysterical.  Unfortunately, I can't upload it on blogger for some reason.  It is posted on my Facebook account, however, and is definitely worth watching.

We made a big deal about the bed and had him pick out his bedding.  We talked about being a "big boy" and sleeping in a bed like Mommy and Daddy do.  This transition was about three months ago, and after a few rough nights, it just worked and he really enjoyed his new freedom.  However, night after night we would find him asleep on the floor by the door.  I would put him back in his bed, only to find that he had crawled right back out.  For over two months, he slept every night on the floor. I was starting to think he would never sleep in his bed! I am happy to say, however, that one night it clicked and he realized that sleeping in a bed wasn't a big deal.  He finally sleeps in his toddler bed every night, and I love going in there to check on him after he's fallen asleep.  He is suddenly such a big boy! My toddler has been replaced with a preschooler!!

Talking to Mom!

All About Me

I just want to announce that I have the most thoughtful husband ever.  Perhaps it was less being thoughtful and more concern about my sanity that prompted Chris to put together a "surprise" girls' trip with my mom to Park City.  I say "surprise" because knowing Chris, it was only a surprise for so long before he accidentally spilled the beans.   Last weekend, Chris flew my mom out to Utah for a few days, and on Friday we left the kiddos with Chris and Margie, and we drove up to Park City for some food...I mean some relaxation.  But seriously, we absolutely ate ourselves silly with the amazing food at the Stein Eriksen lodge!! I'm talking horseradish deviled eggs, shrimp rolls, watermelon gazpacho, mussels, Kobe beef, smoked salmon, and scallops...just to name SOME of the food we ate during that trip! After checking into our sweet suite and having enough lunch to last three meals, we went to the spa for a massage! It was such a beautiful atmosphere and afterwards we enjoyed some time reading (and more eating) in the steam room and sauna.  We then headed back to our room where I read in the hot tub while enjoying some Mt. Dew and fine chocolates (glutton anyone?).  We ended the night by playing checkers (I totally lost), ordering food up to our room, and watching Hunger Games while enjoying some chamomile tea (to settle our stomaches after all that food!).  I slept in the extra bed by the cozy fireplace, and get this: I actually slept through the night! I didn't have to be woken up every 2 hours by a fussy baby, or an upset toddler, or by the snores of my husband.  It was wonderful! Just me, my feather pillow, and the flickering flames.

The next morning we ordered bagels with cream cheese, salmon, and capers, and a few pastries. Go big or go home, right?  Danny was actually the one who delivered our room service! A big part of this trip was thanks to Danny, who works at the lodge, or we never would have been able to afford this extravagant trip.  It was fun to see him and thank him in person.  He and Chris did a great job orchestrating the whole trip.

Getting ready to drive to Park City!

After breakfast we got ready and checked out.  We headed down to the Tanger Outlet mall where we did some quality shopping and ate at a great deli.  It was an absolute zoo at the outlet mall because Derek Hough was making an appearance there and it was packed with people.  Of course, I did snag a quick shot of the guy himself since I am a fan of Dancing with the Stars.  He was a little shorter than I expected.

This trip was heavenly and of the greatest getaways I've ever had.  A HUGE thanks to Chris for putting this all together and offering to watch the kids, and a big thanks also to Margie for helping Chris with the kids! I'm not sure he would have survived without her.  :)  Also, thanks to my mom for making the trip out here and helping me have a great time!  It was bizarre having a trip just for myself and getting to do the things I wanted to do, but I could definitely get used to it.  :) I sure did miss my kiddos though and felt re-energized jumping back into the mommy world.

Thanks sweetie!!

The Spitzers!

A little over a week ago we had Mike, Kirsten, and McKinley come and visit us for a couple of days before heading up to a family reunion.  We hadn't seen them in months and it was wonderful catching up and letting the kids play together! McKinley was such a good sport letting James rough-house with her, and she was great at holding Lily! Preparation for when her little brother/sister arrives in February.

Mike is an avid fisherman, and took Chris along for a (very early) morning fishing trip up the Provo River.   Chris hadn't gone fishing in years and years, and actually caught a fish! He came home about 10 lbs heavier from all the water weight because Mike "swears" he didn't know that his extra waders had holes in them...

That afternoon after lunch at Cafe Rio we went to Kangaroo Zoo.  Daniel, James, and McKinley had such a great time and were thoroughly worn out afterwards...almost as much as us adults were.  James absolutely LOVES the "big slide" there and was in the zone the whole time thinking about which ride to go on next! Margie even rented out the ball room where we had to shoot balls into the nets.  We all agreed that shooting the balls at each other was way more fun.

Even though we only had about a day and a half with the Spitzers, we loved every bit of it and want them to come back!
